Ever since the launch of YouTube in 2005 and its subsequent acquisition by Google, the company has evolved from being a mere video repository into the largest online video platform online. On YouTube, you can view user-generated content as well as corporate content. Think about any topic. You’ll probably find it here.
A bit about the platform
In 2020, YouTube had a reach of over 74% in the USA while its penetration through mobile devices saw similar success around the world. In 2021 alone, the YouTube Music app was downloaded more than 5.1 million times from the Apple App Store and more than 5.2 million times from the Google Play Store.
In 2020, there were around 2.1 billion YouTube users from around the world. Its video streaming service is popular especially among the younger users, who use the platform to view the latest news or to see entertainment channels.
As for videos on YouTube
In August 2020 alone, more than 500 hours of video content were uploaded on the platform. That’s 500 hours of content uploaded every minute! This was certainly an increase in the number of uploads, and this was due to an increase in the appetite of the platform’s viewers. The most desired and viewed video content were on music, entertainment, people and popular blogs.
Is it therefore any wonder that more and more people are becoming YouTube video content creators?
But creating content is not enough.
People won’t follow you if you don’t have a brand.
Building a brand requires consistency and a systematic approach. This can be quite challenging and seemingly technical to creative individuals.
And yet, it is essential that a brand has to be developed systematically in a platform that is based on algorithms.

Here are 9 Tips to build a successful YouTube brand.
Laying the groundwork – Steps to build a successful YouTube brand
1. Find your focus:
You can’t talk about every subject under the sun when creating a YouTube channel. Ideally, you should provide information or knowledge on one of two niches at the most. This will ensure that you are seen as a specialist, and not a generalist. General channels do work, but if you want fame and popularity, that is not for you.
2. Spy on your competition:
After choosing your niche, you have to see how your competition is doing. Now, you can pick any niche on the planet. But how is the competition in the niche? How many channels and videos are catering to that topic? Less competition can be good most of the time, but it may also mean people are just not interested in the subject. Always research well before starting anything.
3. Don’t copy your competitors blindly:
Find your own unique selling point or USP. You can find some success at first if you copy others. But sooner or later, people will lose interest in your content, at best.
What you need to do is to show your viewers why your channel is better or different from the rest. For that you need a USP. What are you providing that others are not? More information? More humour? That’s your USP!
4. Don’t forget keywords:
Creating, editing, uploading and promoting the content: these are certainly important. But if you don’t research or use keywords, you won’t rank high. You see, YouTube works like Google. With the right keywords, you can rank high. According to a Digital Marketing Institute survey, around 76% of viewers share branded videos with their friends if the videos are deemed interesting.
5. Follow the system:
To build a brand on this platform, you need to be consistent. Following different strategies won’t get you too far. YouTube favours both frequency and consistency. That means not only will you have to create more content, but your content has to be consistent in terms of quality, style, subject, and etc. also.
6. Mark your turf:
The final point in laying the groundwork is to brand your channel. You can brand with a logo, unique colours, and so on. Give a brand header as well to make your channel look attractive and professional.
Building your brand
Now that you have laid the groundwork, you can now start building your brand online on YouTube.
1. Build relationship with your fans:
Don’t create content just because you enjoy the topic. Doing so can be a recipe for disaster. You need to care for your fans’ needs. And not just that! You need to do more, such as replying to their comments, thanking them for stopping by, asking them whether your content is helping them or not, and what you can do to make the content better. Trust us. People will love you for asking them these things, as you are valuing them highly.
2. Share your content on other platforms:
A good way to promote your content yourself is to share them on other platforms. For example, you can create a separate video showing interesting highlights from your popular videos. You can then share these on Facebook and Instagram.
3. Collaborate:
Finally, seek partnerships with other video content creators in your niche. These can be fantastic opportunities to offer unique content, as well as to tell your story. Collaborating means you’ll be mutually benefitting each other in several ways, such as getting access to each other’s viewer base.
Collaboration may be tough when you’re starting out, but it is very possible to find sponsorships for small channels too. Collaboration can be great for brand exposure and for building legions of loyal, content-hungry fans.
To get sponsorship, you have to show the company how they’ll be benefitting by collaborating with you. To convince them, show them your audience analysis. They’ll study it and tell you if working with you will benefit them.
Stay consistent
We’ve said it before but we’ll say it again. Consistency is the key towards building a successful, long-lasting brand on YouTube. The steps above may seem simple, but they do require time and work. It is not an overnight solution. It can even be challenging, but the results can be more than worth the effort.
